A customer in Sheung Wan had half a catty of early-season Nagqu cordyceps and was particularly concerned about the common practice of inserting bamboo sticks to increase the weight. The customer therefore brought the goods to the shop to watch the inspection and settle on the spot, wanting to see how we checked each piece rather than merely hearing a quotation online. Examine the cordyceps body carefully against the light. Needle insertion leaves minute holes, while the cross-section may reveal artificial marks or foreign material. We use a magnifying glass to inspect each piece. Any pierced piece is removed and not purchased, rather than being included in the weighed batch.

How strongly does the intensity of the fungal aroma affect the price?

Fungal aroma is a direct indicator of cordyceps freshness and authenticity of origin. Within the same specification, a pure and pronounced fungal aroma can support a price ten to fifteen per cent higher. A faint fungal aroma or unusual smell requires greater caution.

Will the price differ between bringing the goods to the shop and arranging a home visit?

No. The same standards and appraiser are used for piece-by-piece inspection at the shop and during a home visit. The goods are weighed and settled on the spot at a consistent price, so you may choose the more convenient option.

If the entire batch is very dry and some pieces are broken, will this affect the value?

Yes. Full dryness is positive, but too high a proportion of broken pieces reduces completeness. The broken and complete groups normally need to be valued separately, and the broken pieces have a lower unit price.
