Cordyceps price varies with verified origin, specimen size, uniformity, intactness, dryness, treatment, provenance and current demand. Authenticity must be resolved first: a box marked Nagqu or a high asking figure cannot make shaped starch, glued plant material or a different cordyceps species genuine. Compare like units and inspect the actual batch before discussing any market level.
Price drivers only make sense after identity
AuthenticOphiocordyceps sinensisis a caterpillar-fungus complex with a segmented yellow-brown body and a darker stroma emerging naturally from its head. It has eight pairs of legs, with the central four usually most visible, and fine rings around the body. A broken interior is generally pale with a subtle darker line. Natural specimens vary; identical moulded repetition is suspicious.
Common substitutions includeCordyceps militaris, other cordyceps-like materials, plant roots and compressed powder. Fabricated pieces may have stamped rings, confused leg counts, pasted stromata or adhesive seams. Wire, sticks or heavy filling can add weight. An origin certificate or sealed gift box is supporting evidence only when the contents agree with it.
How genuine lots are compared
- Origin:recognised high-altitude areas can receive different demand when provenance and morphology align.
- Count per weight:fewer specimens in the declared unit means a larger average body.
- Uniformity:a consistently sorted batch differs from a mixture of grades and origins.
- Condition:dry, full, intact pieces are distinguished from damp, hollow, broken or mould-affected ones.
- Handling:excessive sulphur treatment, glue, inserted matter and powder change the assessment.
Count and weight must be expressed in the same unit. Hong Kong catties, mainland catties, grams and boxed net weights can otherwise make two quotations appear comparable when they are not. Packaging weight should be excluded, and moisture should not be rewarded as extra cordyceps. If the product is to be ground, agree the identity, dry weight and basis first because powder removes visible authentication features.
Why published figures rarely transfer to a household box
Retail, gift, wholesale and buyback channels serve different purposes and carry different costs. Market demand also changes with season, origin confidence and lot size. A historical advertisement describes that seller's product at that time; it cannot set today's assessment for another batch. The most useful comparison is a current, like-for-like lot with the same identity, grade, unit and condition.
For a preliminary review, retain the box and photograph several representative bodies, the stroma junctions, broken cross-sections, the declared weight and any defects. Do not clean, cut or mix the specimens. Kam Hoi Shing can then explain which price factors are supported and which remain uncertain until direct inspection. Transparency about evidence is more meaningful than a headline number detached from authenticity.
