The first batch harvested from late April to mid-May each year is called early-season cordyceps. Its insect bodies have the fullest nutrient reserves, golden colour and short, thick stromata. Cordyceps harvested after June tends to have hollow insect bodies and elongated stromata. At equal weight, early-season cordyceps commands a distinctly higher unit price.
