Verify and Monetize Nagqu Cordyceps: A True Story from a Tourist Agency Souvenir Box in Central
A client in Central sent us photos of a box of cordyceps they bought from a travel agency during a trip to Tibet a few years ago. They had kept it as a souvenir until now, constantly worried it might be fake, and wanted a professional appraisal before deciding whether to sell it. With this type of item, it's crucial to avoid vague price quotes that change upon arrival. So, after reviewing the photos, we asked the client to provide additional pictures of the underside texture, the stroma (grass head), a cross-section of a broken piece, and an approximate weight. Only then did we schedule an in-person appraisal to save them a wasted trip.
If you want to do some preliminary checks yourself, you can start by reading about Cordyceps Grading Basics. The information about origin, dryness, and storage methods discussed there are exactly what we verify during an in-person appraisal.
How to Begin: Send Photos, Request More Photos, Schedule In-Person Appraisal
For remote valuations, the clarity of the photos is crucial. For this case, we asked the client to provide three types of photos:
- Full body and stroma shots: To assess the plumpness of the insect body and the length of the stroma (grass head), allowing for an initial categorization into large or medium cordyceps.
- Bottom and ring pattern shots: To count the number of feet and check the regularity of the ring patterns. This is where fake cordyceps like *Cordyceps sinensis* (Asiatic) and Xinjiang varieties immediately give themselves away.
- Cross-section of a broken piece: Genuine cordyceps have a distinct "chrysanthemum" pattern and white color on the cross-section, and even emit a mushroomy scent.
Once we received all three types of photos, we provided a general assessment and price range. If the client found it acceptable, we then scheduled an in-person appraisal at our Central branch or a nearby MTR station.
Send all three types of photos to WhatsApp 69035182 at once, and we will immediately provide a general assessment and price range. If acceptable, we will then schedule an in-person appraisal.
What We Look for in Valuation: Authenticity First, Then Grade
When this box arrived, we didn't just glance at it and offer a price. Instead, we meticulously checked several aspects: 4 distinct pairs of feet (the first 3 pairs small, the last pair thick), regular ring patterns, clear "chrysanthemum" pattern on the cross-section, and a strong mushroomy scent. Once its authenticity was confirmed, we moved on to grading.
- Origin: Nagqu is top-tier, followed by Yushu in Qinghai. Xinjiang and *Cordyceps sinensis* (Asiatic) are considered inferior or fakes and are not priced together with genuine cordyceps.
- Weight per piece and specification: The larger, heavier, and earlier harvested pieces are more valuable, categorized as "King of Kings," large, and medium cordyceps, respectively.
- Dryness and proportion of broken pieces: Dry, whole pieces with minimal impurities command a higher price.
This particular box passed all checks, with good quality. The final quoted price was close to market rates, which the client found reasonable. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I'm not an expert. Can I roughly distinguish genuine from fake cordyceps at home?
A: You can do three quick tests: First, count the feet. Genuine cordyceps have 4 pairs of feet, with the first 3 pairs small and the last pair thick. Second, smell it. A natural mushroomy scent is correct; a chemical smell indicates a problem. Third, break a piece. A cross-section with a "chrysanthemum" pattern and white color is genuine. However, for a definitive answer, it's always recommended to consult a professional.
Q: I often hear about *Cordyceps sinensis* (Asiatic) and Xinjiang cordyceps. Is there a big difference compared to Nagqu?
A: A huge difference. *Cordyceps sinensis* (Asiatic) are slender, have only 3 pairs of feet, and lack a mushroomy scent. Xinjiang cordyceps have short, thick stromata and are produced in large quantities. Their value is significantly lower than Nagqu cordyceps. We always grade and price them separately, never mixing them.
Q: It's been stored for a long time and has become damp and soft. Will you still accept it?
A: Softness indicates insufficient dryness. We also need to check for moldy smell, breakage, or discoloration. As long as it's not completely spoiled, you can still send photos for an initial valuation, and we'll make a final assessment upon seeing the actual item.
Q: Which factor primarily determines the price: the number of pieces or the weight?
A: Both factors are considered. The price is determined by a combination of factors, including weight per piece, origin, dryness, proportion of broken pieces, and color. You cannot determine the price based solely on the number of pieces.
