How to Value Old Japanese Kippin Abalone? A Real-Life Account of 9 Aged Abalones Found During a Sai Kung Clear-out
Before emigrating, a family in Sai Kung was clearing out their home. At the bottom of a camphor wood trunk left by an elder, they found a box of old Japanese Kippin abalones. Even the paper was yellowed, and there were 9 pieces in total. Some family members thought that after being stored for so long, they must be excellent, while others worried if they had gone moldy and rotten—opinions were divided. The biggest fear was selling them off casually without fully understanding their value. As soon as we saw the photo, we knew these abalones were worth inspecting. We first guided them on how to photograph the front, back, and side thickness for an initial assessment. The final accuracy, however, would always depend on physically examining each piece and weighing them individually.
Before deciding whether to sell, if you want to have a general idea, you can refer to the Japanese Premium Abalone Valuation Guide. The information regarding count,溏心 (tang xin, or "candied heart"), and age mentioned there will be precisely what we check during photography and appraisal.
A formal inspection is not simply based on saying "it's good stuff"; it involves checking each item individually. When these 9 pieces arrived, we examined four aspects:
- Count (Heads) or Size: This batch, when counted individually, came to roughly six or seven pieces per catty. Their shape was neat, making them medium-to-large within the Kippin category. The fewer the heads, the larger and more valuable they are.
- Age and Curing: Tightened edges, a darker "candied heart" (溏心), and a natural layer of oily frost on the surface are all evidence of aged abalone, not just old packaging.
- "Candied Heart" (溏心) on Cross-Section: Top-grade aged Kippin abalone should have a semi-gelatinous "candied heart" at its center, with an amber "candied heart" color that is translucent when held up to light. When cut open, this batch exhibited this texture.
- Skirt and Glaze: A "yuan bao" (ingot-shaped) body, an intact skirt without chipping, an oily glaze, and no moldy or warehouse smell when sniffed—these are all present for them to qualify for a good price.
Based on these four checks, this batch of aged Kippin abalone was well-preserved, with excellent "candied heart" and age, and the quoted price reflected this. The individual pieces with a neater shape fetched the most outstanding prices.
From Clear-out to Cash, a One-Stop Process
The biggest fear when clearing out an entire house is disorganization. For this batch, we followed this process: First, WhatsApp 69035182 photos of the front, back, side thickness, and approximate weight to get an estimated acquisition range. If you feel the direction is right, we then arrange an on-site visit in Sai Kung or a nearby location for handover. We will weigh each piece individually, negotiate the price for each, and once agreed, payment is made instantly via cash or FPS, settling everything on the same day. No need for you to hold onto a whole box of abalone and wait.
Why Many Seek Jinhai Sheng for Old Abalone
Simply put—we are willing to appraise each piece individually, rather than offering a blanket price for a box of "old stock." The price difference between well-preserved old Kippin abalone and discolored ones can be vast. If there is dampness, cracks, or oil seepage and off-flavors, we will also point out the deductions on the spot, not after receiving the goods. The market price for abalone fluctuates, and if you want to know the recent trends, you can refer to Hong Kong Dried Abalone Buyback Price and Count. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: It's been stored for many years and doesn't have the original box. Does it still count as aged abalone?
A: Yes. "Aged abalone" refers to the abalone itself—a tightened and full body, a darker "candied heart," a natural oily frost on the surface, and an aged aroma are the real evidence. An old piece of paper or an old box is only secondary evidence; their absence does not affect our judgment of its age. The color, density, and aroma of the physical item are the main factors.
Q: How can you tell if it has a "candied heart"?
A: "Candied heart" refers to the semi-gelatinous, translucent quality in the center of the abalone when held up to light, accompanied by an amber color and a rich aroma. Photos can give an indication, but due to color variations and angles in photos, it truly requires cutting a cross-section, handling it, smelling it, and pressing its density to confirm.
Q: Is Japanese Kippin abalone always superior to South African abalone?
A: Generally, Japanese premium abalone has a higher market price, but this doesn't mean South African abalone is worthless. As long as South African abalone has a good count and is well-preserved, there is still a stable demand for buyback. Ultimately, it depends on the physical item, not just the origin name.
Q: If I'm clearing out and have a mix of new and old abalone in one box, will it all be bought at a single, low price?
A: No. When mixing abalone in one box, the easiest way to lose out is on the few good, aged pieces. We will separate each piece, categorize it by count and age (new or old), valuing the good ones accordingly and the average ones accordingly. This ensures fairness, and you can feel comfortable with the assessment.
