Batch appraisal of Cordyceps unearthed from a clear-out: A family's collection in Sai Kung

Before emigrating, a client in Sai Kung cleared out their old cupboards and found four or five boxes of Cordyceps, large and small, in their elders' drawers, totaling about 200 grams, including loose pieces. The storage period ranged from two or three years to nearly ten years. What concerned them most wasn't just a good price, but how the money would be calculated. In family collections, it's a big no-no to buy everything at a single price – even if it's all Nagqu Cordyceps, the unit price can vary significantly between early-harvest "golden grass" and later-harvest stock. After reviewing the photos, we determined it was worth an in-person inspection. We scheduled an appointment to avoid making the elderly wait for half a day. The formal quotation is always based on a piece-by-piece inspection and weighing of the actual items.

If you have a similar mixed batch and want an initial assessment before selling, you can start by reading our Cordyceps Value Assessment Guide. It discusses origin, specifications, and storage methods, which are precisely the points we check during an on-site visit.

How this batch of Cordyceps is quoted in parts

Photos can only give a general direction; each piece is verified upon physical inspection. This entire batch was divided into three groups for pricing, based on origin, harvest period, and dryness:

  • Early-harvest Nagqu Golden Cordyceps: Golden-yellow in color, short and thick stroma, plump insect body, distinct fungal aroma. This is the most valuable group in the entire batch.
  • Regular Nagqu Cordyceps: Brownish in color, medium-sized, sufficiently dry. This falls into the middle tier.
  • Loose miscellaneous Cordyceps and broken pieces: This includes broken pieces and small strands, with poor integrity. Discounts will be applied based on the number of pieces and weight.

After grouping, each group is priced individually, ensuring that the early-harvest golden Cordyceps isn't mixed with the loose miscellaneous pieces, which would lower the average price. Based on current wholesale market prices, this batch is generally of upper-middle quality, with the early-harvest group having the most outstanding unit price.

Collection process: Send photos, home visit, settlement

WhatsApp 69035182 with photos and an approximate weight, and we'll provide a reference price. If you feel the direction is right, we'll schedule a home visit. We serve Sai Kung and all 18 districts of Hong Kong. We'll inspect each piece on the spot, weigh them, and settle the payment immediately, either in cash or via FPS. A receipt will also be issued. If the elderly are unable to come out, family members can discuss and handle the collection on their behalf.

Why choose Kam Hoi Shing, not just anyone?

When clearing out items, the biggest fear is being told "it's all junk" and having the price driven down. We can distinguish between genuine and fake items, and different grades: genuine Cordyceps has four pairs of legs (three small pairs in front, one thick pair in back), regular ring patterns, a chrysanthemum pattern on the cross-section, and a natural fungal aroma when smelled. Counterfeit items like Cordyceps militaris only have three pairs of legs and no fungal aroma; they are easily identified upon inspection. By examining each piece carefully, we can determine which groups are valuable and which need discounts, avoiding any ambiguity.

  • Highlighting the positives: We point out every factor that adds value, such as early harvest color, sufficient weight, dryness, and pure fungal aroma.
  • Addressing the negatives: We explain how dampness, broken pieces, and discoloration lower the price, without bringing it up after the purchase is made.
  • Batch quotation: Early harvest, regular, and loose Cordyceps are priced separately; mixed batches are also itemized.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a batch of mixed Cordyceps, varying in age, be purchased at a single price?
A: Not recommended. If a mixed batch is priced as one, it's usually the few good, early-harvest pieces that lose out. Therefore, it's only fair to price them by origin, harvest period, and dryness for each group.

Q: How can you tell if it's Nagqu Cordyceps, and will you accept counterfeit items?
A: Genuine Cordyceps has four pairs of legs (three small pairs in front, one thick pair in back), regular ring patterns, a chrysanthemum pattern on the cross-section, and a natural fungal aroma. Cordyceps militaris, on the other hand, only has three pairs of legs and no fungal aroma. We inspect each piece, clarifying its grade and authenticity on the spot.

Q: My elders don't remember how long they've had it. Does age significantly affect the price?
A: Age is only one factor. Cordyceps is not like aged fish maw, where older means more valuable. The most important factors are dryness, no discoloration, and no mold. As long as it's well-preserved, even if stored for a bit longer, it can still fetch a good price.

Q: I found a few damp pieces. Will you still take them?
A: It depends on the extent. If there's no mold, no blackening, and the fungal aroma is still present, we usually still value them. However, if there's a strong moldy smell or the insect body is soft, those pieces will be significantly discounted, or even not recommended for purchase, but they won't affect the entire batch.
