Is the price quoted in Tibet worth it in Hong Kong? Today's price for Tibetan cordyceps, spot check and payment on the spot - Yuen Long client real case
A client in Yuen Long received a price list from a Tibetan supplier and felt unsure, fearing being misled by a fake market price. He simply brought the entire batch of goods to us, hoping to find a Hong Kong counterpart for a face-to-face evaluation. The batch he had was a collection accumulated over several years. Before selling, he most wanted to know how much it would actually fetch in Hong Kong and how much it differed from the price quoted in Tibet. We first made a preliminary judgment based on the actual items he brought, and then explained each item one by one on the spot, without rushing to give a price.
To sell knowingly, the first step is: to clearly explain the foot position, cross-section, fungal aroma, dryness, and broken cordyceps ratio of the Tibetan cordyceps, instead of just saying "a gift from a friend" or "stored for many years." With a direction in the initial assessment, and then inspecting each one during the face-to-face check, the figures will be much more accurate. Before authenticity is confirmed, a precise price is meaningless.
Before quoting, you can self-check: If Tibetan cordyceps have been stored for several years, the most important thing is whether they have been exposed to moisture, developed an off-odor, or have too many broken pieces. If the preservation state is good, then there is a basis to discuss a higher price.
If you are still unsure of the grade of your Tibetan cordyceps, it would be more practical to first refer to the Cordyceps Origin and Grade Classification; when evaluating on-site, we will explain it to you using the same approach.
First, determine if Tibetan cordyceps are worth a face-to-face inspection
Before quoting a price, first look for obvious deductions, then see if the appearance can support a higher grade. This time, we inspected each item in front of the client:
- Pros: Plump body, thick and heavy, clear four feet and rings, short and firm stroma – these support a higher grade, belonging to the first-harvest Nagqu variety from Tibet.
- Cons: The stroma of this batch was longer, belonging to the mid-to-late harvest, and slightly less plump; fortunately, the dryness was sufficient and there were no mold spots, so the deduction was limited.
- Market Comparison: The price quoted in Tibet was about 18% lower than the buyback price in Hong Kong, which falls within a reasonable wholesale difference. A very small difference usually means a resale by a Hong Kong middleman, while a very large difference requires vigilance against adulteration or counterfeit goods.
Combining these factors, the final quoted price for this batch was close to the first-hand market price, which the client accepted on the spot. In terms of origin, Nagqu is the most prominent, followed by Yushu; Xinjiang cordyceps and Cordyceps militaris are not in the same category and will not be purchased at the Nagqu price.

Most frequently asked questions about Tibetan Cordyceps
Q: What is a reasonable difference between the supplier price in Tibet and the purchase price in Hong Kong?
A: Generally, the wholesale price in Tibet is about 15% to 25% lower than the purchase price in Hong Kong. If the difference is too small, it's usually a resale by a Hong Kong middleman; if the difference is too large, you should be wary of low-grade goods being mixed in or even fake cordyceps.
Q: What is the relationship between the length of the stroma and the newness of the cordyceps?
A: There is. Short and firm stromas are mostly from early harvest, first-period cordyceps, which are the most valuable; long stromas and somewhat hollow bodies are mostly from mid-to-late period, and both plumpness and unit price will be lower. To accurately judge, you need to look at the stroma, along with the chrysanthemum pattern of the cross-section and the fungal aroma.
Q: If the packaging is past its date, does it completely lose its value?
A: No. The packaging date is only a reference. buyback is more about the actual state of the item - whether it's dry enough, whether there's mold, and whether the shape is intact. If it's dry and mold-free, it can still be purchased even if it's past the marked date.
Q: How much will the price be deducted if there is a musty smell?
A: It's judged based on dryness, color, and degree of mold. Slightly rehydrated items will have a small deduction and still be purchased; if they have turned black or show obvious mold spots, it may not be recommended to purchase them, to avoid them being unusable for stewing.
