Looking to sell gift box Cordyceps from Nagqu? Send photos for an initial estimate, then schedule an in-person appraisal – Kwun Tong client case study

A client in Kwun Tong had several boxes of Cordyceps at home, some still with their original tags. These were gifts from relatives a few years ago, just sitting around. Feeling financially strained, they wanted to sell them for some extra cash. To avoid a wasted trip, they first WhatsApped a few photos and an approximate weight. After receiving the photos, we assessed whether an in-person appraisal was worthwhile and provided a rough estimate. A formal quote, however, always requires examining the physical items, weighing them accurately, and inspecting each box individually.

If you want to have a better understanding before selling, you can start by reading the Cordyceps Value Assessment Guide. The origins, specifications, and storage methods mentioned there are also the points we check during an in-person appraisal.

Remote Appraisal: What to photograph

The more comprehensive your photos, the more accurate the initial estimate. When sending photos, these items are most helpful:

  • Whole box and tag: Photograph the entire box, the seal, and the tag so we can see the specifications, origin markings, and sealing condition. If anti-counterfeiting codes are present, it helps with traceability verification.
  • Worm body and grass head: Take close-up photos of a few pieces, showing the annular rings of the worm body, the four pairs of legs, and the stroma on the head. This helps us assess the uniformity of the shape and thickness, and if it's Nagqu grade.
  • Cross-section and weight: If there are broken pieces, photograph the chrysanthemum pattern of the cross-section. Also, include a photo of the electronic scale reading. The color, dryness, and gram weight combined help us make an initial judgment.

After opening the box for an in-person appraisal, we mainly look at the uniformity of the shape, the purity of the fungal aroma, and the dryness. In terms of origin, Nagqu is preferred, followed by Yushu. If the product matches the appearance of premium Nagqu, it will be paid at the premium rate.

From sending photos to receiving payment, how to start

WhatsApp 69035182 with photos and approximate weight, and we'll provide a reference price. If you find the estimate acceptable, we can then schedule an in-person appraisal at our store, at your home, or at a nearby MTR station. We'll weigh and pay on the spot.

What we consider when pricing your items

  • First, origin and specifications: Nagqu or Yushu, "King of Kings" or medium-to-large size, and the weight in grams – these determine the base price.
  • Then, storage and dryness: Dry, odorless, and intact Cordyceps retain their value. If they are damp, have lost their aroma, or have turned black, deductions will be made based on the severity.
  • Original packaging adds value: Factory-sealed gift boxes with verifiable anti-counterfeiting codes and complete tags will receive a small premium on top of the physical appraisal value.

You can also sell this box later if you wish. For an idea of current market trends for similar items, you can first refer to Hong Kong Cordyceps回收價錢, then schedule an in-person appraisal through our Cordyceps回收系列服務.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will original gift boxes with tags fetch a higher price?
A: Yes. Sealed boxes with verifiable anti-counterfeiting codes have better appearance and inspire more confidence, so we add approximately 3% to 5% to the physical appraisal value. However, the exact premium still depends on the shape, dryness, and origin of the contents.

Q: What is the maximum cash payment I can receive on the spot?
A: The maximum on-the-spot cash payment is approximately HKD 100,000. Any amount exceeding that will be paid via FPS or bank transfer. The entire process is completed on the spot, with no waiting or rescheduling required.

Q: How are gift boxes and loose Cordyceps priced if I sell them together?
A: They are priced separately. Original gift boxes and loose Cordyceps have different appearances, so we will inspect and quote each part individually, then combine the total for you. We will not provide a vague lump sum.

Q: Is there still a resale value if they have been stored for several years?
A: Potentially. If they have been stored in a dry, odorless condition with intact worm bodies, they can still be appraised after several years. If they have lost their aroma, softened, or turned black, deductions will be made based on their condition.
