Spider and White Flower fish maw belong to different premium traditions and should not be distinguished by colour alone. Spider maw is recognised through a hammer-like head, rounded projections, short whisker-like structures and a male central band. White Flower is usually smaller, with fine chevron or cloth grain, paired longitudinal creases and, in many forms, rows of openings.

Spider maw has a three-dimensional head structure

An unopened spider maw often keeps a raised tube beneath a broad T-shaped head. Short projections grow around two rounded sides, while the male form contains a line or band through the middle. The rear may conceal a membrane. When fishers open and flatten the maw, the dramatic silhouette changes but corresponding head and fibre features should remain.

Imitations can be made by cutting another maw to create false whiskers. Examine the base of each projection for continuous tissue, the head transition for fresh cuts, and the central band for natural integration. Origin claims from Southeast Asia are secondary to this physical agreement.

White Flower reveals itself through fine repeated details

White Flower maw may weigh only a few grams to several tens of grams, so small size does not place it below a common larger maw. Its surface can show V-like chevrons or, on very thin pieces, a woven cloth appearance. Paired creases and small openings on either side are frequent, although species, region and male or female form create exceptions.

The male form can have uneven thickness; the female tends to be more uniform. Farmed material may show a chest projection with residual oil, while wild-origin claims need supporting morphology and records. Appraisal should describe what is visible instead of forcing every specimen into one perfect reference image.

Condition affects the two varieties differently

Spider maw requires intact head projections, central structure and substantial dry tissue to preserve its strongest identity clues. White Flower relies on delicate grain, fine openings and creases that aggressive cleaning can erase. In either case, active mould, insects, dampness, glue, bleach or artificial stain changes acceptability.

Backlight both faces, measure the thickest point and document edges, repairs and packaging. Compare size only within the confirmed variety and form. The reason both categories receive market attention is their distinct anatomy and culinary texture, not unsupported medical stories. A defensible appraisal therefore names the variety, explains sex-form confidence, states condition and leaves current demand as the final variable.

Set the two silhouettes beside one another

Spider maw is approached from its tubular abdomen, head projections and central band, while White Flower is approached from a flatter form, fine grain, longitudinal creases and rows of openings. A side-by-side photograph should retain scale and show the head end clearly. If a piece lacks an expected feature, record the absence instead of relabelling it immediately. Sex, regional form and processing can alter expression, so the conclusion should rest on the linked anatomy that remains visible.
