Cordyceps appraisal at Kam Hoi Shing examines authenticity, origin evidence, average specimen size, uniformity, breakage, dryness, odour, possible adulteration, packaging and verified weight. A photograph review can identify the likely scope, but the final buyback decision follows direct inspection. No genuine quote can be separated from the condition of the actual lot.

Screen the species before ranking the box

Natural winter cordyceps is a combined larval body and fungal fruiting structure. An assessor looks for coherent body rings, eight pairs of legs with the central four usually prominent, a fruiting structure emerging from the head, and a natural junction rather than glue or an inserted part. Other cordyceps products may have their own uses, but they should not be graded as the same material.

Close views of a naturally broken cross-section can add information when the lot already contains fractures. There is no reason to damage a sound specimen solely for remote screening. Package descriptions, claimed plateau origin and purchase records support provenance only when they remain consistent with the contents.

Condition checks expose hidden deductions

Genuine material can still be unsuitable or reduced in grade after poor storage. Dampness, clumping, active mould, pests, strong perfume, sulphur-like odour or unexplained powder are different from the light soil residue and earthy aroma expected of dried natural specimens. A box should be sampled across layers because the most attractive pieces may have been placed on top.

Broken cordyceps is assessed separately from deliberately reassembled material. Toothpicks, wire or adhesive may be used to join fragments or increase weight. The head junction and fracture surfaces deserve particular attention, as do loose grass heads and a large quantity of debris at the bottom of the container.

From image review to handover

Start with the full lot and label, then photograph representative large, small and average specimens with scale. Include the body, legs, head, fruiting tip, defects and package seals. Kam Hoi Shing can use the set to state what appears consistent, what remains uncertain and whether an in-person review is worthwhile.

Physical inspection confirms smell, dryness, weight and consistency. The explanation should separate identity, grade, condition and current demand so the owner can understand the proposed terms. If an agreement is made, the lot and settlement details are recorded at handover. If not, the specimens remain with the owner. That is a practical appraisal process, not a claim that every old box has the same market outcome. For sealed gift sets, the condition of the inner paper, desiccant and viewing window can provide useful clues about humidity exposure before opening, without disturbing the specimens.
