Wild cordyceps forms when a parasitic fungus infects a moth larva. The fungus develops inside the larva, and its fruiting body later emerges from the remains, creating the familiar insect-and-fungus structure.

If the Cordyceps fungus had not invaded, the larva would have completed its life cycle of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Due to the invasion by the Cordyceps fungus, the larva's life ends at the larval stage and becomes food for the fungus, which caused the misconception that cordyceps are worms in winter and turn into grass in summer.

Regarding the growth of cordyceps, humans find it mysterious. Scholars of the past wrote a poem: 'Cordyceps is true to its name, transforming and generating in a continuous flow. One substance can influence both plants and animals; the principles of the world are indeed hard to fully understand.'

In fact, cordyceps is a combination of an insect and a fungus. The insect is the larva of the bat moth, and the fungus is the cordyceps fungus. Every midsummer, in snow meadow areas above 3800 meters, as the snow melts, tiny bat moths lay thousands upon thousands of eggs on flowers and leaves. The eggs then hatch into small larvae, which burrow into the moist, loose soil, absorb nutrients from plant roots and stems, and gradually grow white and plump.

The source describes fungal spores infecting bat-moth larvae, drawing nutrients from the host and developing mycelium inside it. Its additional claim that larvae become cordyceps by eating fungus-bearing leaves is presented as part of that account rather than as a verified biological mechanism.

An infected larva moves to roughly two or three centimetres below the surface and dies head-up. The fungus gradually fills the body; by late spring or early summer, a purplish-red fruiting stalk about two to five centimetres long emerges from the head. This insect body and stalk are the harvested cordyceps. The source regards this stage as the preferred harvest period and names Qinghai, Diqing and Nujiang in Yunnan among the principal origins.
