What appearance can support—and what it cannot prove
Body segmentation, fruiting-body form, colour and overall proportions can help identify mixed grades, damage or suspicious samples. However, camera angle, lighting and image processing can alter those details. A yellow colour, thicker body or any single visual sign cannot establish authenticity, species, harvest date or exact geographic origin.
If provenance or authenticity is central to an appraisal, retain the original packaging and records. A higher-risk or higher-value batch may require an appropriate specialist examination. Do not treat soaking, snapping, burning or smelling a sample as a definitive home test, and do not wash or process the goods before inspection.

How storage condition changes the assessment
A sealed container is not automatically dry. If moisture entered the package, long-term sealing may trap condensation and odour. Do not spray alcohol, fragrance or insecticide on the goods, and do not mix batches with different storage histories. Separate any pieces with mould, moisture, pests or an unusual smell from other dried food products.
Age does not automatically increase value. Older cordyceps may remain appraisable when well documented and stored, but absorbed moisture, brittle structure, altered odour or lost provenance can reduce marketability or prevent further consideration.
