Altitude helps frame cordyceps origin, but it is only one part of a buyback appraisal. The inspected lot must also show coherent Ophiocordyceps sinensis morphology, a comparable size specification, stable dryness, completeness and clean storage. Famous-place packaging cannot compensate for mixed species, long empty stromata, inserted joins, excess soil, moisture, pests or mould-like damage.
Origin is a hypothesis assembled from clues
Nagqu in Tibet and Yushu in Qinghai are strongly recognised high-alpine sources. Cold meadow ecology, a limited collection season and difficult terrain constrain natural supply. Yet a label stating “above 4,000 metres” does not identify the contents. Regional confidence comes from the specimens, source records and a consistent lot history.
An assessor compares body fullness, yellow-to-brown tone, eye area, abdominal feet, regular segments, stroma proportion and the biological junction between body and stroma. Natural variation and overlap are expected. No single foot count, colour or scent should be promoted as an infallible test.
Size must be expressed against a defined weight
The trade often describes how many whole pieces make a catty or another stated unit. Fewer pieces generally mean larger individuals within an otherwise comparable origin and grade. The unit, dry net weight and sampling method must be explicit, especially when the top of a gift box contains larger specimens than the layers below.
Whole bodies, natural fragments and repaired pieces should be separated before counting. A long stroma can make a specimen look impressive while adding relatively little body substance. Heavy attached soil also distorts weight, so net product and foreign matter cannot be treated as one specification.
Dryness and integrity change usable quantity
- Firm bodies are distinguished from soft, sticky or recently moistened material.
- Broken examples can show a pale coherent interior without sacrificing intact pieces.
- Magnification can reveal glue, pins, wire or inserted matter at a join.
- Pest powder, hollowing, fuzzy growth and sour odour are recorded as defects.
- Seals, receipts and declared origin remain supporting evidence, not substitutes for inspection.
A calibrated scale and, where appropriate, a moisture instrument provide more reliable evidence than snapping a piece by hand. Owners should leave the batch unwashed and unsorted, because cleaning can remove soil patterns, join material or mould-like traces that help explain its condition.
For remote screening, useful images show the entire tray, several bodies from different layers, the feet, eye area, stroma tip and body junction. A scale reading beside the unboxed lot helps expose mixed specification, while defect photographs prevent later disagreement about breakage or dark pieces.
Kam Hoi Shing reports origin confidence, size distribution, whole-piece proportion, dry weight and damage before referring to current demand. The review does not convert elevation into a medical potency score or promise a preset rate. Two boxes marked with the same mountain can receive different conclusions because their actual specimens, not their slogans, determine the grade.
