Cordyceps has long been regarded as a valuable traditional Chinese medicinal ingredient and has been widely used in Chinese medicine. One proprietary Chinese medicine, Jinshuibao Capsules, was developed by the Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Its ingredient is artificially fermented Cordyceps mycelium (Cs-4 strain), which traditional Chinese medicine describes as nourishing the lungs and kidneys and supporting essence and qi.

1) The ingredients of cordyceps:
Its components can be grouped broadly into polysaccharides, proteins and amino acids, lipids, nucleosides, mannitol, ergosterols and trace elements. Among the most studied bioactive constituents are cordyceps polysaccharides, cordycepic acid and cordyceps peptides.

2) Reported research findings:

1. Antitumour activity: The article cites laboratory studies reporting that cordyceps polysaccharides may act through mechanisms such as direct cytotoxicity, inducing apoptosis or inhibiting metastasis. These preclinical findings do not establish cordyceps as a cancer treatment.

2. Immune regulation: The cited research reports changes in immune-organ weight and activation or proliferation of T cells, NK cells, monocytes and macrophages, together with lymphokine secretion. These are research observations, not proof of a clinical benefit.

3. Blood-glucose research: Polysaccharide extracts from cultured cordyceps have been studied in diabetic animal models. Proposed mechanisms include stimulating insulin secretion, reducing hepatic glucose output, affecting glucose-metabolising enzymes and changing glucose-transporter levels. Animal-model findings are not medical guidance for diabetes.

4. Learning and memory: In a mouse model of cerebral ischaemic injury, cordyceps polysaccharides were reported to improve learning and memory, increase brain SOD activity, reduce MDA and improve free-radical scavenging.

5. Liver research: The article cites studies of cordyceps polysaccharides in chemical liver injury, immune-mediated liver injury and liver-fibrosis models.

6. Kidney research: The article discusses acute and chronic renal-failure and renal-fibrosis models. In rats with modelled acute renal failure, cordyceps polysaccharides were reported to reduce serum total protein, urea nitrogen, creatinine and K+ levels, as well as urinary protein, ketones, red and white blood cells and the kidney index, while improving pathological damage. These are animal-model findings.

7. Antioxidant and ageing research: Polysaccharides in cordyceps fermentation broth have shown hydroxyl- and superoxide-radical scavenging activity in laboratory work. The article also mentions experimental anti-photoageing applications and lifespan findings in fruit flies.

8. Anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiviral research: Cordyceps mycelium extracts have shown in-vitro anti-inflammatory activity. The article also cites research claiming analgesic effects from cordyceps peptides nearly comparable to pethidine; this is not a recommendation to use cordyceps for pain treatment.
