This anonymised Taikoo case involved boxed cordyceps received through business contacts and left unused during a household clear-out. The lot showed full yellow-brown bodies and relatively short fungal structures, but a Nagqu claim required more than colour and aroma. Appraisal separated biological authentication, regional evidence, piece-size distribution, dryness, repairs, debris and storage condition.

Unopened gifts were discovered during a cabinet review

The owner worked in trading and had received several cordyceps boxes in earlier years. The household preferred other dried foods and had little interest in preparing the specimens, so the boxes stayed closed. When cleaning the dried-seafood cabinet, the owner became concerned about insects and humidity and requested an assessment while labels, seals and the original display could still be recorded.

Photographs captured the whole presentation before any specimens were lifted. A neat top layer showed plump bodies and moderate fungal structures, yet the lower layer still needed sampling. Gift-box arrangement can concentrate larger pieces at the surface or conceal powder, breaks and moisture below. The assessor therefore selected material from several positions and returned each group to a labelled tray.

Nagqu was treated as an origin claim with supporting clues

The source described a clean yellow-gold tone, brown-red eye area, full body and comparatively short fungal structure as consistent with Nagqu trade descriptions. Those tendencies overlap with material from other plateau areas and can shift with lighting or storage. Packaging history, purchase records and lot-wide morphological consistency were considered alongside appearance; no single eye colour or smell was used as a regional certificate.

Natural cordyceps identification relied on body segmentation, eight pairs of legs, head emergence and a coherent fungal structure. Existing broken material could provide an internal view without damaging a sound specimen. Several pieces were checked for wire, toothpicks, adhesive, joined sections and added powder. A mushroom-like note and firm dry feel supported the observed condition, while mustiness or local softness would have required isolation.

Size grade followed authentication and sampling

After identity review, the lot could be compared for average body size, fungal-head proportion, uniformity and complete versus broken pieces. Net dry weight excluded inserts and container material. The final record stated Nagqu confidence separately from physical grade and present demand. Owners can assist by retaining every label, avoiding rethreading or cleaning, and photographing representative large, middle and small specimens beside the same scale before arranging an appointment.

Standardised light reduces origin bias

Photograph suspected Nagqu material on a neutral grey or white card under diffuse daylight, then include a colour reference and ruler. Compare it with any other box under the same setup rather than using photographs taken in different rooms. Warm lamps can make bodies appear more golden and deepen the eye area. Controlled images do not prove origin, but they remove a major source of visual distortion and make the assessor’s confidence statement easier for the owner to understand.
